Chevrolet has one of the most comprehensive SUV lineups on the market today-so if you're looking at Chevy SUVs for sale, you'll find models for every driver and lifestyle, from the subcompact Trailblazer and Trax to the full-size Tahoe and Suburban. Chevy is constantly updating and upgrading these models, giving them the latest safety, performance, and infotainment features-and this is certainly the case with the 2024 Chevy Traverse, which ushers in the third generation of this popular family SUV.Â
It continues to offer three roomy rows of seats for the kids and their friends, but now it adds the most comprehensive assortment of standard safety features, an exceptionally efficient new powertrain, and a rugged exterior look that reaches its ultimate expression in the new Z71 trim. Come by Dave Gill Chevrolet to see this model in person, and read on to get your hype up.
A Bold New Powertrain
Since it first hit the roads in 2009, the Traverse has featured a 3.6-liter V6 gas engine. However, this is no more. Chevy has replaced this V6 with a smaller I-4 gas engine that comes standard on all four trims of the Traverse. This might come as a shock to many, but the I-4 is a more powerful engine than the V6; it may be small, but it is fierce, with a turbocharger to boost output without negatively impacting fuel economy.
The 2.5-liter Turbo I-4 gas engine on the 2024 Traverse comes paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This setup delivers 315 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque-a full five more ponies and 51 lb-ft more torque than the outgoing 3.6-liter V6. This engine is so powerful that the Traverse can tow up to 5,000 lbs-a figure you usually only see with light-duty pickup trucks.
The electronic transmission on the Traverse is also innovative. Chevy has removed the stick shifter from the area between the driver and passenger seat; it is now on the steering column, much like how things used to be on GM vehicles from the '60s and '70s. This allows you to make shifting moves without having to remove your right hand from the steering wheel. It also gives you more functional space for the console between you and whoever is riding shotgun in your Traverse.
The Largest-Ever Infotainment Interface
Sometimes size does matter-and this is certainly the case when you are discussing infotainment touchscreens. The previous model year of the Traverse featured a 7.0-inch touchscreen with an 8.0-inch one on higher trims. While this was satisfactory, a larger screen allows you to more easily access the different apps on the infotainment system. It also provides a larger view for the standard HD rear vision camera. This is why the folks at Chevy have given the 2024 Traverse an enormous 17.7-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system-easily the biggest standard screen of any iteration of the Traverse.
The Chevrolet infotainment system on the 2024 Traverse lets you seamlessly connect your phones via Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth. This will allow you to make hands-free calls and texts while also accessing your favorite apps. You can even listen to your favorite music as well. If you choose the RS trim, you will get a Bose audio system that will simply blow your passengers away.
Staying connected and charged is a snap in the Traverse, which features six USB ports across its three rows. If you accidentally leave your charging cables at home, you need not worry since the LT, Z71, and RS trims come with a wireless charging pad. The 2024 Traverse is also Wi-Fi hotspot capable, which will enable you and your passengers to stay connected.Â
You will also get access to OnStar, which provides you with a number of different safety, entertainment, and convenience features. It also provides you with 24/7 coverage by OnStar advisors, who will contact you if there is an issue with your Traverse as revealed by the vehicle's diagnostic systems.
Standard Driver Assistance FeaturesÂ
Chevy may offer more standard safety and driver assistance features on the 2024 Traverse than any other model on the market today. As with most Chevy vehicles, the Traverse has the Chevy Safety Assist suite of six driver assistance features. Forward Distance Indicator, Forward Collision Alert, and Automatic Emergency Braking will work in concert to help you avoid a front-end collision in your Traverse. Meanwhile, Front Pedestrian and Bicyclist Braking will help you avoid colliding with one that may cross the path of your vehicle. Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning will help keep your Traverse centered if you get momentarily distracted. IntelliBeam High Beam Assist will control your high beams at night so you can focus on driving.
The 2024 Traverse goes far beyond this with additional standard safety features that leave little to chance. Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert will let you know if you can safely change lanes. If the coast isn't clear, Blind Zone Steering Assist will help you avoid colliding with a vehicle in the adjacent lane. Traffic Sign Recognition will post the current speed limit on your infotainment screen, while Speed Limit Assist will work with the Adaptive Cruise Control to make sure you are not at risk of exceeding the posted limit.
Chevy has given the Traverse some of its newest safety tech, too-one of which is Lateral Impact Avoidance/Side Collision Assist, which works in a similar fashion to the Forward Collision Alert. This system detects a potential side impact from another vehicle in an adjacent lane. If that vehicle should enter your lane, this system will give you an alert to the imminent impact and provide braking and steering assistance so you can take evasive action to avoid the collision. This and other new standard driver assistance features will help keep you and your passengers safe no matter where you go.
The All-New Off-Road-Ready Z71 Trim
For the first time, Chevy has taken its popular Z71 trim from the Silverado series and applied it to an SUV. The 2024 Chevy Traverse Z71 is unlike any other midsize SUV you have ever driven; it's ready to take on the off-road with specialized features that help it earn its Z71 badge.
Unlike other Traverse trims that offer drivers a choice of front-wheel and all-wheel drive, the Z71 comes with a standard twin-clutch all-wheel drivetrain; this provides the right amount of torque to each wheel, giving you the traction boost you need when off-roading. This trim features a specialized off-road suspension, giving it an additional inch of ground clearance over the three other Traverse trims. The Traverse Z71 rides on a set of 18-inch high-gloss black machined-face wheels wrapped with Goodyear Wrangler-Territory All-Terrain tires; these will give you some extra grip to handle the rough terrain of the off-road trail.
There are other specialized features of the Traverse Z71. Chevy has strategically placed a series of aluminum skid plates to shield vulnerable parts of the vehicle's undercarriage; this will give you peace of mind as you traverse obstacles like logs and rocks. The standard Hill Descent Control will allow you to get down steep grades on the trail by controlling the brakes and adjusting engine speed to conditions. There is also a set of red tow hooks that don't just look cool; they can come in handy if you get stuck on the trail, letting you hook up a cable and winch to pull your Traverse out of a rut. You can also use it to help another driver who got stranded. Chevy completes the package with Z71 embroidery on the seats and badges on the Traverse's exterior.
